The total sales of all convenience stores in Japan in FY2020 decreased by 6.1% (within comparable 8 companies) to 11.886 trillion yen, falling below the previous year's level for the first time since FY1981, the oldest records that can be traced back. On the other hand, the number of stores operating on shorter hours has increased rapidly over the past year. The number of stores operated on shorter hours by the 3 major companies increased from 305 stores (as of February last year) to 2,000 stores (4% of the total, as of February this year).
