Retail Area Census: Tokyo metropolitan area Ikebukuro, three facilities in TOP10 -- leisure complex attracting customers
Nikkei Research Inc. released the latest data of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area Retail Area Census, a survey on commercial facility usage.
This survey was conducted in the spring of 2021, covering approximately 700 commercial facilities in greater Tokyo area (Tokyo and surrounding three prefectures). Based on the results of the survey, the Seibu Ikebukuro store topped in the most visited facility ranking for the second consecutive year. Seibu Ikebukuro store had gained the top rank in the previous survey six months ago (autumn 2020), overtaking Isetan Shinjuku store, which had been in the top spot for 15 consecutive times.

---|---|---|
2(1) | Shinjuku | Isetan Shinjuku store |
3(2) | Shibuya | Shibuya Hikarie |
4(9) | Ikebukuro | Ikebukuro Sunshine City (Alta, Alpa) |
5(4) | Shinjuku | Odakyu Department Store Shinjuku |
6(5) | Ginza, Yurakucho, Hibiya | Ginza Mitsukoshi |

8(10) | Outside Tokyo metropolitan area | Gotemba Premium Outlets |
9(13) | Akihabara | Yodobashi Akiba Building (Multimedia Akiba) |
10(15) | Kawasaki, Tsurumi | Lazona Kawasaki Plaza |
Three facilities from the Ikebukuro area are in the top 10 list, either having the same or higher rank from the previous spring 2020 survey, indicating that the area's presence is growing.
The Ikebukuro Sunshine City (Alta, Alpa), ranked fourth, is a commercial complex with a sky-view deck and an aquarium where visitors can also enjoy leisure besides just shopping. Those facilities with similar characteristics, such as Lazona Kawasaki Plaza and Tokyo Sky Tree Town (Tokyo Solamachi), had topped others in the ranking this year. The survey was conducted during the second emergency declaration in Japan, but these facilities have demonstrated their ability to attract customers providing a local place for leisure and shopping.
Looking at the results by area, with the exception of Shibuya Hikarie in third, the facilities in Shibuya/Omotesando area saw a significant drop in rankings where those facilities lacked floors providing food. That was presumably caused by the significant impact from the decline of visits to the central part of the city due to the spread of remote work and the self-quarantine behavior, in addition with the increase of at-home consumption (take-outs), resulting the change in purpose of visiting those commercial facilities rather to getting food.
